Ultra Light Trout Fishing

from:

Ultra light trout fishing is one of the most overlooked methods of catching trout, in my opinion. Sure many anglers fish for trout, but it seems to me that many of them aren't nearly as effective as they could be. The best way to fish for trout is through the use of ultra light gear and baits, and the interesting thing is that many anglers don't realize just how effective this type of gear and equipment can be.

So what do I mean by "gear and baits" when I refer to ultra light trout fishing? First of all rods and reels should be of the ultra light variety (and for the uninitiated, ultra light rods and reels are quite small). Secondly, ultra light reels should be spooled with line no larger than six-pound test. I personally use four-pound test, but six-pound is passable. When it comes to baits and hooks when ultra light trout fishing, smaller is usually better. Lures should be in the 1/16 to 1/4 ounce range, and hooks for live bait should be size 8, 10, or smaller.

Many people believe that large trout can't be caught and landed on gear this size, but this simply isn't true. I personally catch trout in the twenty plus inch range all the time, and my fishing mentor was notorious for catching trophy trout (four pounds and above) using this type of gear. You'll be amazed at the size of fish that can be hooked and landed using ultra light gear, spooled with four-pound test.

This is why ultra light trout fishing should be a much more popular activity. A great rig to use while fishing in the manner described in this article is the gang hook rig, which is simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem thus enabling live bait (especially live worms) to be presented in a totally natural and effective manner. Gang hooks are a great addition to anyone's ultra light trout fishing repertoire.

Another wonderful addition to anyone's ultra light trout fishing repertoire is a bait bag. A bait bag is simply a small bag that hangs from your fishing vest and carries live worms while fishing. The worms just wait there until they're needed, which saves a ton of time baiting up. With a bait bag, your bait is always at your fingertips waiting to be used. There is no longer a need to try to remember where you last stuck your container of worms, not with the help of a bait bag.

The bottom line is that ultra light trout fishing is the most fun and effective way to fish for trout. Not only that, but using ultra light equipment will make you a better angler. You have to learn to "play" your catch, rather than just winching it in. At the end of the day this is what fishing is all about, right? Playing your catch? I know in my world this is most certainly what fishing is all about.
