Fishing For Trout - Tips & Tricks
from:Fishing for trout, here's a subject that it seems like many people write articles about, yet don't have a clue what they're writing about. Trout fishing, at least as far as larger more experienced fish are concerned, it a fairly technical activity. There are certain tips and tricks that should be employed, all of which will dramatically increase your catch rates. This article is about those tips and tricks.
More than 20 years ago I had the pleasure of fishing with and learning from the best trout angler I've since known, and most of these tips were taught to me by him. He was renowned in the area of Central Pennsylvania where I grew up as being a "trout fishing master". And I must admit, he had the mounts on the wall to prove it!
The first thing that this man insisted on when fishing for trout was the use of ultra light gear. By 'gear' I'm referring specifically to your rod, reel, and fishing line. In his opinion, nothing larger than ultra light gear should be used for this type of fishing. I have since stood by this rule, with great success, and have come to the conclusion that my fishing mentor was dead on about the use of ultra light gear for fishing for these fish. He also believed that your ultra light rod and reel should be spooled with four-pound test (or lighter) when fishing for trout.
The other thing this man believed in was the use of gang hooks. These are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem that he would tie himself. These hooks are the best way to present live bait (especially live worms) that I've ever seen, and I use them to this day. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't even consider fishing with live bait without having some pre-tied gang hooks with me. Gang hooks have become as much a part of my fishing repertoire as my fishing rod!
Another big factor in trout fishing is making sure that you're on the water when the fish are the most apt to bite. This may sound strange, but it's true. You can make sure your on the water at the most opportune times simply by studying the weather and moon a little bit. For example, do you know what frontal systems are considered "fish catching" fronts? As a matter of fact, the answers that you need can be found by paying attention to the weather and moon. These two forces of nature have a huge impact on your fish catching ability.
The final thing that my fishing mentor believed in was having an efficient and effective way of carrying your bait. That's why he came up with the concept of a bait bag. This small bag hangs off of your fishing vest and carries your bait (especially live worms while you are fishing. This way there's almost no wasted fishing time baiting up. Your bait is always literally at your fingertips waiting to be used. A bait bag was an integral part of his trout fishing repertoire and is for me to this day.
Follow these simple yet effective tips and tricks on your next trip and see what happens? You won't be disappointed, I promise you that.
